Andrey Kurkov is a Ukrainian novelist and journalist who writes in Russian. Born in St Petersburg, he studied at the Kiev Language Institute and remains a resident in Kiev, where most of his novels are set. He has worked as a journalist, a screenwriter, a film cameraman and a prison warder. His biggest hit to date is Death and the Penguin, an offbeat crime novel in which the protagonist and his pet penguin become embroiled in the intrigues of the mafia and the secret service.
